Literature at Lunch

Saturday, January 13, 2018 • 26 Tevet 5778

12:00 PM - 2:00 PMKHL Room
Savor the poetry of Marge Piercy and the lyrics of Leonard Cohen, with Gail Lipsitz, Mary Dagold, and Rabbi Geoff in our next meeting of Literature at Lunch.
Marge Piercy celebrates Jewish traditions, culture, and spirituality in her poems about family relationships, Jewish learning, and the holidays. From her lyrical evocations of nature to her strong social consciousness, her poems resonate for us as Jews and as humans.
Leonard Cohen wrote deceptively simple poetic music that carries the message of the modern Jewish prophet. The trajectory of his long life reflects the arc of Koheleth's in Ecclesiastes. The conclusions of both are strikingly similar: life is finite and full of suffering. We can know nothing beyond. But there are gifts of life: art, love, sex, humor, music, wisdom.  These have the power to redeem. We'll listen to several of his songs as we discuss his lyrics and music.
