S’lichot Gathering

Saturday, September 21, 2019 21 Elul 5779

7:00 PM - 9:30 PMChapel/KHL Room
Come join us in the chapel for our continuing tradition of S'lichotSaturday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m. which includes prayer, song, and a film. Our custom is to view a film that treats the themes of repentance and forgiveness. Our movie for S'lichot has been selected by Cantor George and is the classic, 1943 film, Casablanca—one of the greatest movies ever made. But why Casablanca for S'lichot? It’s a movie with three Jewish writers, a Jewish director, a cast filled with refugees from Hitler, a score written by a Jewish composer—but with no mention of Jews anywhere in the script. But all of these elements underline the central themes of the film: forgiveness and return. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) cannot become whole again, emotionally and morally, until he forgives Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) and returns to the fight against Fascism.  As George Robinson put it so succinctly, “Some of us need the whole month of Elul to figure that out; Bogie gets it in just under two hours.”
