As Judaism evolves and as we evolve as Jews, “what worked” in the past may not work now—hence the recon motto, the past has a vote not a veto.  Making determinations / choices about Jewish practice presents us with the problem of confronting all of ourselves, our past, our present and our future. From a Reconstructing Judaism perspective the task is a matter of clarifying values.  Identifying and weighing values becomes an interesting, mindfulness challenge. Over the course of several weeks we’ll look at our practices, what we value about those practices, ask what other practices are related or impacted and examine sources that inform practices. We’ll have electronic versions of Rabbi David Teutsch’s* Jewish Practice (some chapter’s not the whole 3 volumes), and we’ll take a look at some ancient texts to see how they inform our practices.
*Rabbi Teutsch—former president of Reconstructionist Rabbinic College, and Director of the Center for Jewish Ethics
