All are welcome to our virtual Literature and Lunch for a discussion of "Sadness is a White Bird," a fascinating debut novel by Moriel Rothman-Zecher, an American-Israeli writer (First Atria Books, 2018)Born in Israel, after being raised and educated in the U.S.A., Jonathan moves back at 17, eager to join the army and defend the Jewish state. But he is also conflicted about the possibility of having to monitor the Palestinian territories. When Jonathan meets Palestinian twins Laith and Nimreen, the son and daughter of his mother's friend, the three teenagers become inseparable, sharing confidences, adventures, and seemingly unbreakable bonds. Jonathan is forced to confront the impact of Israeli occupation on his Palestinian friends and their families, and his own conflicted loyalties. He pays a price for certain decisions he makes. This story portrays "a beautiful, cross-cultural, against-the-odds love ... in the midst of what seems like an implacable and never-ending conflict" (as described by the publisher).
