What do baseball, coffee, hydro-fracking, children and bright light of a near death experience all have in common? They're all fertile ground for songs by Marc Black. He is a talented singer-songwriter, and he has won both the Mobius and the London International Advertising Competition for Best Original Music. And he’s also received kudos for his CD productions from Billboard and Rolling Stone Magazine. During the past year, Marc's been deeply involved in fighting hydro-fracking and has written and recorded a song, No Fracking Way, with John Sebastian, Eric (dueling banjos) Weissberg and a hundred citizens singing along on the chorus! His newly released music video, produced to illustrate his song, I Love You Rachel Maddow, has been viewed over 45,000 times!
And Marc's most recent single, Sometime a Spark (an ode to a Tunisian fruit peddler whose act of resistance started a worldwide revolution), received immediate notice in Tunisia. Marc’s Pictures of the Highway CD was #34 for the year (2010) on the Folk DJ Chart. His novelty single, Ooh I Love My Coffee, was named Folk Song of the Year on ABC Radio's Fame Games, which also named him its Folk Artist of the Year.
Marc has recorded more than a dozen CDs in his long career, including one that was a ‘pick hit’ in Billboard Magazine, and another that was recognized as a ‘minor masterpiece’ by famed music A&R man, John Hammond Sr. He also produced a children’s album, American Children, that was recorded with Richie Havens and Taj Mahal, and was awarded Best of the Year honors by the American Library Association. His music and video project, Stroke of Genius, a collaboration with a stroke survivor who was in a coma for 21 days, has been endorsed by the National Stroke and National Aphasia Associations. Marc has travelled the Country performing for stroke support groups and medical gatherings at Universities.
So you’re invited to come hear Marc Black’s eclectic blend of rhythms and songs of life---any donations will go to the Kol HaLev Synagogue. There is no admission fee: an $18 donation per person is suggested. Snacks and drinks will be included (which is why I want an approximate count).
